Group 3 : PAH/PVOD predisposing genes & signaling

Senior researchers

   Dr. David Montani, MD, Ph.D.

David is a Professor at the French National Reference Center for Pulmonary Hypertension in the Department of Respiratory Medicine headed by Pr Marc Humbert at the Hôpital Bicêtre, Paris-Saclay University, France. His main research interest is in the field of pulmonary vascular diseases, particularly in the management of pulmonary veno-occlusive disease (PVOD), pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) associated with drug exposure, PAH associated with orphan pulmonary diseases and genetics (BMPR2, ACVRL1, NF1, TBX4, SOX17, EIF2AK4) of PAH and PVOD. D. Montani has developed a screening program for pulmonary hypertension in asymptomatic subjects with genetic susceptibility to PAH/PVOD in the French PAH network.

In addition, Pr. Montani leads team 2 of the INSERM UMR_S999 laboratory «Pulmonary Hypertension: Pathophysiology and Novel Therapies» led by Prof. Marc Humbert, his work focusing on the pathophysiology of heritable and drug-induced PAH and PVOD. David Montani has published >300 articles on pulmonary hypertension (genetics, drugs-associated PAH, rare pulmonary diseases, basic science) and is Editor-in-Chief of Respiratory Medicine and Research.

   Dr. Sébastien Hascoet MD, Ph.D.

Sébastien is a cardiologist specializing in the endovascular treatment of congenital heart disease from newborn to adulthood. He is head of the pediatric cardiology department at Marie Lannelongue Hospital and has been attached to team 2 of the INSERM UMR_S999 since 2015. He defended his Ph.D. thesis at the Doctoral School 569 - Therapeutic innovation: from fundamental to applied at the University of Paris Saclay in 2020 on "Advanced therapies for pulmonary hypertension associated with congenital heart disease." Its main research themes are PAH associated with congenital heart disease and the development of medical devices dedicated to the endovascular interventional treatment of congenital heart disease.

Dr. Jérôme Le Pavec MD, Ph.D.

Jérôme is a pulmonologist and head of the pulmonology and lung transplantation department of the Marie Lannelongue Hospital. He conducts clinical and translational research on lung transplantation for rare diseases. Among the themes that occupy his activity, he retain lung transplantation for PAH with a particular concern for many on right ventricular and lung graft interactions, risk of primary graft dysfunction, and chronic graft dysfunction.

 Ph.D. students

   Dr. Estíbaliz Valdeolmillos, MD

Estíbaliz joined team 2 of the INSERM UMR_S999 in November 2021 to complete her Ph.D. under the co-direction of Pr Olivier Sitbon and Dr. Sébastien Hascoet. Estíbaliz is a pediatrician specializing in the cardiology of congenital heart disease from newborn to adult. Her research project is based on risk stratification of pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) in congenital heart disease with a multidisciplinary approach. This research project aims to analyze the predictive value of different parameters (echocardiography, 4D flow MRI, biomarkers and metabolomic analysis, invasive hemodynamics, genetics) and to build a specific prognostic score for patients with PAH and congenital heart disease."

    Dr. Julien Grynblat, MD

Julien is a pediatrician, subspecialized in pediatric cardiology at the Necker Children's Hospital, and holds a Master 2 in "Biology, physiopathology, pharmacology of the heart and vessels" (Paris Saclay University). He is a Ph.D. student in team 2 of the INSERM UMR_S999 in co-direction with Dr. Frédéric PERROS and Pr David MONTANI. His work focuses on drug toxicities associated with pulmonary arterial hypertension. In parallel, Julien is involved in studying the evolution of the genetics of pulmonary arterial hypertension in adult and pediatric populations and the in-depth study of the proliferation and characterization of plexiform lesions in pulmonary hypertension.

    Dr. Antoine Beurnier, MD

Antoine is a Respiratory Physiologist and works as a Physiologist in the Respiratory Functional Investigation Unit of the Bicêtre Hospital. After having studied different aspects of respiratory physiology during his Master 2, his thesis, and his specialty thesis, Antoine joined the team in 2021 to study the pathophysiological mechanisms of exercise intolerance in patients with pulmonary hypertension in the framework of a thesis co-directed by Pr David Montani and Pr Marcel Bonay.

His work should allow a better characterization of gas exchange abnormalities during PH based on data collected in the EFR laboratory in patients with PH or with a genetic mutation associated with the disease.

Lab manager

   Mary Dutheil

Mary joined team 2 of the INSERM UMR_S999 in October 2020 as a Research Technician (Marie Lannelongue Hospital). Mary has a BTS in Biotechnology, and a Professional License in Biotechnology applied to health. In Team 2 of the INSERM UMR_S999, she is in charge of the culture of lung explants from patients. She also participates in team projects using biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology techniques, and immunohistochemistry. She is the prevention assistant for team 2 and is responsible for lab management.
